Historical note:: U.S. Army paymaster Major Joseph W. Wham and his military escort were robbed of more than $28,000 in gold and silver coins on May 11, 1889 along the road between Fort Grant and Fort Thomas about fifteen miles west of Pima, Arizona. The trial, held in Tucson, for seven suspects lasted from November 11, 1889 to December 14, 1889 when all were acquitted. The money was never recovered. Arizona pioneer; lawyer, newspaper publisher, and politician. Hughes established the Arizona Daily Star in 1877 and published it until his death. He served as district attorney, probate judge, attorney general for Arizona, U.S. Court Commissioner, Governor of Arizona, 1893-1896, and chancellor of the Board of Regents, 1897-1898.
